Pleats ever changing tambour pattern utilises the unpredictable nature of steam bending Oak. Each piece is steamed and bent by hand, springing back to its own unique shape, the pieces are then Shou Sugi Ban scorched and scrubbed to create an open grain texture organic to the touch. The supporting Oak is bleached to create the subtle grain white canvas for the pattern. When placed together the sliding tambour door is created, hiding the cabinets functional interior. Pleat questions what makes an object ‘luxurious’ or ‘valuable’, is it the heritage of material, process of production or perhaps an objects ethics? In a time where we understand very little about how the objects that surround us are made, can the language left by a crafts person speak to an objects audience and create an emotional connection between them by inviting intrigue to explore the surface left by the maker?
